    Lung Function Testing

Lung function testing provides objective information about how your lungs are working. RespCAIR offers comprehensive PFT under specialist supervision at Ramsay Health Noosa Hospital.

    What is lung function testing?

Lung function testing measures how well your lungs move air, hold air and transfer oxygen into the blood. Tests may include spirometry, full lung volumes (body plethysmography), diffusing capacity (DLCO) and respiratory muscle strength. Results help diagnose, stage and monitor conditions such as asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease and neuromuscular disorders.

    Common symptoms

    • Persistent cough or wheeze
    • Breathlessness on exertion
    • Suspected asthma or COPD
    • Pre-operative assessment for major surgery
    • Monitoring of known lung disease
    • Occupational lung disease screening

    When to seek specialist review

    • Symptoms suggestive of an airway or lung condition
    • Known respiratory diagnosis requiring monitoring
    • Pre-operative evaluation
    • Exposure to occupational dusts or fumes
    • Medications that may affect the lungs

    How RespCAIR assesses this condition

    • Specialist referral and pre-test review
    • Spirometry with bronchodilator response
    • Lung volumes (body plethysmography)
    • Diffusing capacity (DLCO)
    • Maximal respiratory pressures where indicated
    • Specialist interpretation and reporting

    Treatment and management overview

Lung function testing is not a treatment in itself; it informs diagnosis and guides personalised management. Results are interpreted in the clinical context by your specialist and shared with your GP.

    Practical self-management

    • Bring a current list of medications to your appointment
    • Ask if you should withhold any inhalers before testing
    • Avoid heavy meals and vigorous exercise immediately before testing
    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
    • Allow extra time for the appointment
    • Discuss any concerns about the test with our team
